Soul Kindness

Parents are the bows from which their children are sent forth. The best thing you can do for your “living arrows,” is to mend and strengthen yourself. How far can an arrow go shot from a broken bow?

Children learn more from what you are than what you teach. Who are you? Listen to your self-talk. How do you speak to yourself in your mind? Are you kinder to others than you are to yourself? Do you drive yourself hard inside? I know I do.

If you aren’t kind to yourself – your heart & soul – it will come out and unfortunately, it always affects the people closest to us.

Be kind to yourself today. Speak what God says about you. You are his favorite. You are loved for who you are, not for what you can do. One of the kindest things you can do for yourself is give yourself a little margin, be still, exhale. It was Jesus who said come to me all you weary and I will give you rest. This rest he speaks of is soul rest. If you’re like me, you probably don’t often come to Jesus with this request. To me, it feels kinda weak…

But it’s necessary. If I don’t treat my heart kindly. I end up loving those closest to me as I love myself… I drive them emotionally. I end up pushing them to resolve their emotions more quickly than needs be. You’re hurting? Here’s an ice cream. Here’s a more positive perspective. Here’s “whatever” to help you move on.

Guilty as charged. In those moments, I’m driving their heart, like I drive mine.

Yes, I’m a broken bow. The first step to healing this brokenness of mine is awareness of it.

Reagan’s got a scraped knee and is crying. I have no problem tending to the physical scrape, but, I, knowing my default internal posture – “drive hard, ride wounded, move on” – I stop and ask have I taken the time to tend to her emotional needs as well (or am I just trying to push her to resolve things “emotionally” as quickly as possible.) When I do, I’m training her soul to be like mine.

As I’ve grown aware of this, I’ve done better. And so I sit quietly before Jesus and he teaches my soul to rest. He mends this old bow of a soul, helping me send my living arrows further than I – freer than I – into the glorious futures He has prepared for them. 🎯
